After graduating with a degree in architecture from EPFL, Emmanuel Rey earned, alongside his professional practice, a European Postgraduate Diploma in Architecture and Sustainable Development jointly awarded by EPFL, UCLouvain, ENSA Toulouse, and the AA in London (1999), as well as a PhD from UCLouvain (2006), which was awarded the Gustave Magnel European Prize in 2009. In 2000, he joined the architecture and urban planning firm Bauart in Bern, Neuchâtel, and Zurich, becoming a partner in 2004. Since 2010, he has also been a professor at EPFL, where he founded the Laboratory of Architecture and Sustainable Technologies (LAST). In 2015, he was honored by the Swiss Academies of Sciences with the Swiss Academies Award for Transdisciplinary Research (td-award).
